100 Songs To Save Your Life
Dear future spawn,
At this point, I still have not met your future dad (or maybe I have but I don’t know it yet!). I don’t have a clue whether he’s going to be rich, gorgeous, intelligent and tall. I wish he would be. But most of all, I wish that there’s really a future dad for me to meet and mate with so that I can actually produce a spawn. Don’t you wish that, too, little yet-to-exist one?
ANYWAY. If there’s anything that I can share with you now, it won’t be riches nor strikingly good looks. It certainly won’t be HEIGHT (for your own sake, pray that future dad has oustanding height genes!). What I can share with you is my passion for three things: music, books and movies.
Let’s talk about music first. Music is like a best friend. It will always be there for you no matter what. There’s music to celebrate your milestones and triumphs, there’s music when you feel down and blue, there’s music when you fall in love, there’s music when your heart gets broken, there’s music to get you through nights when you want to hide out from the world. Music breaks down walls. Music puts into words the thoughts that you can never say.
I’m sharing with you 100 songs that saved my life. Actually, there are more than 100 songs that saved, and has continued saving, my life. For now, these will do. Someday, I will sit down with you and tell you the stories and memories I associate with each song. And I hope someday you would love music the way I do and find those songs to save your life.
Love, your future mom (IF and WHEN that moment comes!)

I wish you look at me that way
We ended up singing a lot of 98 Degrees songs and I didn't know until then how much I missed their songs! Yeah, I did have a boyband phase just like everybody else, but I was more into latter artists like 98 Degrees and 5ive than into Backstreet Boys and N'Sync. We sang The Invisible Man, Because of You, The Hardest Thing, I Do (I used to like this for a wedding song!), Was It Something I Didn't Say and Still.
I would probably look for their album later *coughtorrentscough*, but right now I'm browsing through youtube for the vids of their songs. I didn't expect to find a vid of Still (I luff this song!)since it wasn't released as a single, but somehow I couldn't find the other songs. This is what I found:
Don't you just love them? Classic boyband stuff, the arm stretching, the finger pointing, yes, the camwhoring! But I think Nick Lachey has a pretty great voice. Too bad the whole Jessica Simpson thing happened. He could have been a good solo artist.
Now I need to find videos of 5ive and LFO, too!

Fivesome, Again
WHAT. THE. HELL.
Wait, what? Do you mean Japanese guys? Well, if you must ask, I like the lead actor in the kdrama My Girl, but other than him and Rain sometimes, I don't
whose every ripple of muscle screams
my Arashi boytoy, Sakurai Sho, who looks prettier as a man dressing up as woman than I am, even on my best day.
(still a long way to go compared to Hugh Jackman's Biceps Of Swoon-inducing Masculinity)Tuesday, December 30, 2008
The Color of Memory Is Always Blue
I wondered aimlessly
Maybe eternity is something like this
"Love will end someday", you whispered with a faraway look
I was pretending I couldn't hear,
I wonder if you noticed
The cherry blossom petals danced in the wind
There's a feeling here that won't change even if time passes by
I want to see you, I want to be with you
I try embracing you in my dreams
I want to run after you, I wish to follow you
I'm wandering in a deep maze
I want to see you, I want to be with you
Not the dream but the real you
But I can't see you, I can't meet with you
I'm drowning in feelings that have nowhere to go
We looked up with our shoulders touching
The night sky is a planetarium
The same stars they still rise and disappear somewhere
The feelings stagnate in my heart
I can never turn them into words
I wish I can wrap them softly in my sighs and exhale them
Even if it runs by in the waves of the changing seasons
The memories won't come undone in between the past and the future
I want to see you, I want to be with you
I try embracing you in my dreams
It won't fade away, it won't fade away
The faint smell still lingers in the air
I want to see you, I want to be with you
Not the dream but the real you
And it hurts so much, it hurts so much
That faint blue starts to blur

Meme Killed The Radio Star (The Clues)
- Cause all I really want is to be with you / feeling like I matter, too / if I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago / I might be here with you
- All these rhythms that you hide / only love can save us now / all these riddles that you burn / yeah, yeah, yeah
- Swimming through sick lullabies / choking on your alibis / but it's just the price I pay / destiny is calling me / open up your eager eyes
- I thought I was fool for no one / Oh, baby, I'm a fool for you / you're the queen of the superficial / and how long before you tell the truth
- He's the one who likes all our pretty songs / and he likes to sing along / and he likes to shoot his gun / but he don't know what it means / don't know what it means and I say
- 5ive
- You realize that / sometimes you're just not okay / you level out, level out, level out / it's not alright now / you need to understand / there's nothing strange about this
- The Beatles
- Imago
- But I'm a million different people from one day to the next / I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
- We're just two lost souls / swimming in a fishbowl year after year / running over the same old ground / what have we found? / the same old fears
- Must you make me laugh so much? / it's bad enough we get along so well
- I've realized that the reason I think / the changing seasons are beautiful / is because you're there / I'm going to tell you now (Obviously, it's either you know them or you don't! I posted the English translation of their song, just in case. :p)
- Kiss me, please kiss me / but kiss me out of desire, babe, not consolation / you know it makes me so angry cause I know in time / I'll only make you cry
- I'm lost in admiration / could I need you this much / Oh you're wasting my time / you're just wasting time
- Di magawang alisin ang aking mata / sa anghel na nakikita / iniibig na ba kita / Oh ewan ko ba
- Paul McCartney
- When you're on a golden sea / you don't need no memory / just a place to call your own / as we drift into the zone
- Green Day
- I would say I'm sorry / if I thought that it would change your mind / but I know that this time / I've said too much / Been too unkind
- Drive me away / cause the night just feels right / take me away with you tonight / anywhere with you
- David Cook
- I'll sing it one last time for you / then we really have to go / you've been the only thing that's right / in all I've done
- This is what you get / when you mess with us / and for a minute there / I lost myself / I lost myself
- I got shit running through my brain / it's so intense that I can't explain / all alone in my white-boy pain / shake your booty while the band complains

Of Fickleness, LSS and Fanfics
It is when you see a pair of lovers holding hands while walking and the guy was kissing the back of his girlfriend’s hands, and your first thought was “Aww, how sweet”, followed immediately by “Damn, if my future boyfriend ever do that to me in public, I swear I’m gonna punch him in the guts”.
There’s an awesome cover of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” that I’ve been listening to for the past three weeks or so. It’s a live version by Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright and the cover is sort of stalker-y and raw and really nice to listen to. I’ve been playing it in the office for a week and it’s my officemates’ current LSS – and they’re hating me for it! Bwahahaha!
Me thinks that the way to conquer the world is to spread my addictions.
Anyway, here's a vid of the song. The quality isn't that great but you can definitely hear the awesomeness of the song!

Shove That Umbrella Ella Eh Eh Down Your ...
The song “Beautiful Girls”, in any version, shape or form, is making me go suicidal. An acoustic version is NOT an improvement. Next thing you know, they’ll be singing an acoustic low, low, low, low, low.
In related news, I really couldn’t stand most of the dregs, sorry, songs (or what they would pass off as songs) these days. It’s funny, because it so often surprises people that there are songs I never listen to, or that I actually don’t know ALL songs. Remember, I am the same person who mangles, swaps and screws lyrics.
In other news, yeah, people, I don’t have good tastes, if taste = joining the bandwagon, so don’t react strongly when I say that Coldplay is ripping off U2.
Anyway. If I can be allowed to recommend a nice current song, try The Ting Ting’s That’s Not My Name.
This post is brought to you by Jela, who finally understood and embraced the merits of Jpop songs.

Top 5 On Friday - Week 168
Top 5 songs that you've loved the longest
I can’t think of any song that I’ve loved when I was in primary school that I still love until now. It was in high school when I started to enjoy music and began to listen to songs and artists that I really like and not just what everyone else liked. You might also notice a lot of cassette tape references which will give you an idea of how long I’ve been listening to these songs!
1. Upside Down (2 Minds Crack) – what else? I heard this from my eldest brother’s collection. I copied it on a cassette tape and got the lyrics by listening to it repeatedly. It was only in college when the song started to really mean something to me but I fondly recall listening to the song on most nights.
2. Tindahan Ni Aling Nena (Eraserheads) – when Eheads burst into the scene, we were first to have a copy of their first album in our neighborhood. We still have a sari sari store back then and I would play Eheads’ album when I’m manning the store. My guy friends would often tease me and change the lyrics of the song to “Tindahan ni Aling Jela”. As most of you would know, that’s also the title of my first ever blog!
3. Till I Hear It From You (Gin Blossoms) – I recorded this song on a cassette tape when I heard it on the radio and I can still recall the voice of the DJ when he started to speak even before the song has ended!
4. Light and Shade (Fra Lippo Lippi) – before “Beauty and Madness” made everyone swoon, I was already daydreaming to the tune of this song.
5. Build Me Up, Buttercup (The Foundations) – I used to go by the nickname of Buttercup, thanks to this song!

Shuffle, Schmuffle
- If you reached the top of Mount Everest, you would shout:
“Clumsy” - Our Lady Peace (Brilliant! The clumsy has conquered the highest peak in the world!)
I’ll be waving my hand, watching you drown, watching you scream quiet or loud…
- The next time you stand up in front of a group of people, you'll say:
“You Get What You Give” – New Radicals (Don’t let go, you got the music in you!)
This whole damn world can fall apart, you’ll be ok follow your heart, you’re in harm’s way I’m right behind, now say you’re mine…
- Your favorite thing to say when drunk is:
“One Step Closer” – Linkin Park (Ha! Shut up while I’m talking to you!)
All these words they make no sense, I found bliss in ignorance, the less you hear the less you’ll say, you’ll find out anyway…
- Your message to the world:
“Tea and Sympathy” – Jars Of Clay
Fare thee well, trade in all our words for tea and sympathy, wonder why we tried for things that could never be…
- When you think of your best friend you think:
“Lonely No More” – Rob Thomas
Now it seems to me that you know just what to say…
- Your deepest secret:
“Come Around” – Rhett Miller (Ouch?!)
Am I gonna be lonely for the rest of my life?
- Your innermost desire:
“Enter Sandman” - Metallica
I tuck you in, warm within, keep you free from sin, 'til the sandman he comes…
- Your oldest memory makes you think:
“Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” – Culture Club
Give me time to realize my crime… (Wala lang, hindi ko marelate yung song sa category eh!)
- Somewhere in your wedding vows, you should have included:
“About A Girl” – Nirvana (I Do!)
I’m standing in your line, I do hope you have the time…
- On your deathbed, you'll whisper:
“Upside Down” – Two Minds Crack
Baby you don’t understand, our love lies lost but you’re still holding my hand…
- Your friends say behind your back:
“You’re A God” – Vertical Horizon (I know! Hahaha!)
But I’ve been unable to put you down, I’m still learning things I ought to know by now…
- You say behind your friends' back:
“Where Did You Sleep Last Night” – Nirvana (Because my friends sleep around?!)
My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night…
- Your opinion of Blogging:
“Mad World” – Tears For Fears (It’s truly a mad, mad cyber world out there)
I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I ever had...
- When you wake up in the morning, you mutter:
“Name” – Goo Goo Dolls
You grew up way too fast and now there’s nothing to believe, and re-runs all become our history…
- If you found yourself lost on a desert island, you'd yell:
“Trouble” - Shampoo
Oh oh! We’re in trouble!
- Right now, your feelings are:
“Crash Into Me” – Dave Matthews Band (I’m in stalker mode!)
Lost for you, I’m so lost for you, you come crash into me…
- What's your excuse for reposting this music survey?:
“Beat It” – Michael Jackson (Beat It! I want to post this and there’s nothing you can do about it!)
You wanna be tough, better do what you can, so beat it, but you wanna be bad...
- Your life's soundtrack:
“Perfect” – Smashing Pumpkins (Just perfect!)
Perfect, you know this has to be, we always were so free, we promised that we'd be perfect...
- The day you fell in love was the day that:
“You Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” – Hall and Oates (Syeteks! The day I fell in love was the day he fell out of love?!)
You never close your eyes anymore when i kiss your lips...
- You Scream During Sex:
“Lithium” - Nirvana (Yeah, yeah, yeah!)
I'm so horny, but that's okay, my will is good, yeah, yeah, yeah! I like it - I'm not gonna crack!
- Your farewell message to the readers of this music survey:
“One Way Or Another” - Blondie (one way or another, I know you'll be answering a meme of this sort, too!)
One way or another, I'm gonna win ya, I'm gonna getcha, getcha, getcha, getcha!

Makes Me Wonder
I know – you would probably suggest that I forget the VIP tickets and just go for the mas malayo but less expensive seats. But how can you truly appreciate the concert experience if you’re watching it from afar? Is that any different from watching it on TV? So call me maarte, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s either I’m near or I don’t bother. This means that I get to watch foreign acts live on very rare occasions. They would have to be really, really worth it…
Hence this list!
My Top 7 I-Would-Pay-Big-Bucks-To-See-Them-Live Bands
1. U2
2. Gin Blossoms
3. The Killers
4. Radiohead
5. Green Day
6. Metallica
7. Foo Fighters
Runner-up… F4. Hahaha. Kidding.

Let Them Know It's Christmas Time
So I give the song a rest for a few days before I listen to it again. The urge to cry was gone but I still feel this tug in my heart. Maybe because it breaks my heart to realize that more than 20 years has passed since the recording of that song and still the problem of world hunger that they tried to address is still existing today.
But anyway, I found a way to make myself feel just a little better: I watched the song's video in YouTube and it was such a nice trip down the memory lane - seeing the young Boy George, George Michael, Sting and Bono who was just so handsome:
I also checked out the Live Aid performance and it was even better! David freakin' Bowie was there and so was Freddie Mercury! And Sir Paul McCartney!
So, 10 more days to go before Christmas. I wish for a lot of things, but now I wish we could give an affirmative answer to their question - "Do they know it's Christmas time at all?"

You're A God
And I just thought I’d let you go…
Vertical Horizon, you know how much I love your songs – but the ticket prices are just darn expensive! Didn’t you realize it’s the Christmas season here and I need to satisfy first my godchildren’s and relatives’ wishes before I can give in to my addictions?!
I promise not to listen to any of your songs for the next few days and I promise not to read/watch/listen to any of the news/plugs about your upcoming visit. Nothing personal, just want to lessen my feelings of longing and yearning and regret and disappointment and frustration and sadness…
Come back in Manila, please? I’ll make sure I am free and able (financially) to watch you.
***
but I'm still here...
I've seen the ashes in my heart
I smile the widest
When I cry inside and my insides blow apart
I tried to wear another face
Just to make you proud
Just to make you put me in my place
But everything you wanted from me
Is everything that I could never be

"What Can I Do To Make You Love Me?"
Anyway, here's my Top 5 Top-Of-The-Head Songs That Remind Me Of College:
- What Can I Do? (The Corrs) - in high school, it was "Pakisabi Na Lang" by The Company. I seem to have a thing with songs about unrequited love.
- Big, Big World (Emilia) - I used to sing this song with my seatmate and one of my closest male friend (together with "No One Else Comes Close") and while I sing the lyrics as it is, he would change the lyrics to "You're a small, small girl in a big, big world...". Tama nga naman siya.
- Until The Time Is Through (5ive) - I was not a big fan of boybands, not even back in high school. But in college, I sort of finally understood their cheesy appeal, and 5ive was my fave back then. This was memorable because this was also the fave song of a friend with whom I never really shared a common taste in music.
- Harana (Parokya Ni Edgar) - a spillover song from high school, I remember listening to this song through a Walkman! College was the last time I ever did a mix cassette tape and the last time I bought an original cassette tape. Parang kailan lang, no?
- Every Time I See You (Fra Lippo Lippi) - it was an ordinary night turned inexplicably magical, with this very song playing in the background. And that's all I'm saying about that!!!

Mix Tape 001: Break Up Songs
The rule is pretty simple: you make your own rules! My own rules are pretty simple: each tape or category will have a maximum of 15 regular tracks and maximum of 3 bonus tracks, so that each mix tape will have no more than 18 songs. Only one song per artist per mix tape. The songs will not be arranged to show my least favorite to my most favorite; rather, the arrangement is all about finding the balance of a catchy opening, a tight middle and a dramatic ending. Well, the last rule is the ideal, but could be waived depending on my whims.
Now, to make things interesting - I need your participation in this. You can either add songs based on my category or you can suggest other category for my next mix tape through the comments section. Or, the best part: start your own mix tape challenge and tell me about it! It’ll be a really, really cool read (not to mention the chance to listen to other’s choicest songs!), so don't forget to leave a link also to your site.
I guess my main criteria here is that I chose the songs I refused to listen to when I was in my break up mode. (well, not all of these songs, but I did refrain from listening to some songs, not just those awesomely mushy songs but very specific songs, if you get what I mean) Break ups are hard enough without one going through the experience of listening to some dude or dudette wailing about how their hearts have been mutilated and castrated by their former lovers (though in a more lyrical and expressive manner).
On the other hand, listening to break up songs can be a sort of cathartic experience to a broken heart. What better way to understand the things you are going through than to listen to another person’s own experience. When you get to hear those songs that truly express all that you’re feeling, better even than you could have done yourself, is one of those highs at such a low point in your life.
After all, a break up is not all about shattered hearts and broken relationships, it’s also about learning from your previous relationship, it’s about finding courage and hope despite the pain, and rising above the ashes of your failed relationship – to make the next biggest record about how your heart have been mutilated and castrated by your former lover/now certified asshole/bitch ex!
AAAANYWAY…
